In November 2021, I was in Nigeria for a family friend's wedding and decided to stay in Lagos for a few weeks to finally experience my first ‘Detty December.’ A few days after I arrived, my mum and I started planning a little get-together for my sister’s 28th birthday—despite her insisting she didn’t want to do anything. On the morning of the party, I went to buy drinks with one of my sister’s friends—who also happens to be Tomiwa’s cousin—when he randomly said, “I have somebody for you.” I shut it down immediately. I wasn’t looking for a holiday romance, and setups have never really been my thing. That was the end of that… or so I thought. That evening, the party was in full swing, and I noticed this guy looking at me. I turned to his cousin and asked, “Wait, is that the guy you were trying to introduce me to?” He just smiled. Meanwhile, my sister was enjoying the party, watching everyone dance—Tomiwa, being the biggest stepper of the night, clearly trying to impress me. Out of nowhere, she turns to me and says, “I like this guy’s vibe… I’d love to have a brother-in-law like that.”Not long after, his cousin—who was definitely on a mission—says, “Whether you like it or not, Tomiwa is going to be your husband.” It was such a bold statement, and I was starting to feel like this was all one big setup. Then, Tomiwa casually adds, “Yes, that’s right.” Mind you, this same guy, confidently adding “Yes, that’s right,” hadn’t even had a conversation with me yet.By the end of the night, we finally had our first conversation, and he asked for my number. I changed my flight a few times, and a 3-week Christmas trip ended up being extended to 7 weeks. And, well… here we are.

Hold on! That’s not exactly how it happened…So yeah, my cousin had mentioned in passing that he was thinking of introducing me to a girl, but at the time, it was just casual conversation—it never really went anywhere. We never discussed it further, and I didn’t give it much thought.Fast forward a few days later, we were hanging out when he mentioned his friend was having a small birthday party and we could go together. At that point, I had no idea that his friend was the sister of the girl he had spoken about earlier. The evening came, and it was time to meet up, but I wasn’t interested in going anymore. I had just come out of heavy Lagos traffic and was very happy to relax and chill at home—I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. However, one of our friends kept insisting I come out, and after a lot of convincing, I finally gave in and headed to the party. When I arrived, the vibe was nice and chill. I caught up with my friends, wished the birthday girl well, and greeted everyone else. Then I noticed her. I won’t lie—she immediately caught my eye. Shortly after I settled in, she offered me a drink. After a while, I sent my cousin a message: “Is this the Teni girl you were talking about?” and he responded, “Yes, her name is Tife.” To this day I’m not sure why I thought to ask if that was the same girl.At that point, I was a man on a mission. It was time to leave, I got her number, but our group conversations kept dragging on. We ended up saying our goodbyes three different times, each with a hug. To this day, she never admits that we hugged thrice that night.Looking back, I truly believe our meeting was divine. Every little detail had to happen exactly the way it did for us to be where we are today. And I must say—I’m one lucky man!
